Louvre Museum at 10 minutes walk from Universite Hotel

The Musée du Louvre, situated at the heart of Paris, is the biggest Parisian museum ans one of the greatest in the world with its 160 106 m². The Musée du Louvre owns 300 000 works of art and more than 30 000 are exposed. The rest of the works are exposed in the Musée d’Orsay for the period from 1848 to 1914 and to the Centre d’Art Contemporain Georges Pompidou for the period from 1914 to nowadays. The Musée du Louvre underwent a total renovation in 1981 and the construction of the pyramid that ended in 1993 gave a younger aspect to the museum. The Musée du Louvre is starting a great period of modernization; new architectural project, renovations, multimedia guides, access t everybody… Until 2020, the works will be numerous in order to turn the Louvre into a vanguard museum. In order to highlight some collections, the museum is starting the renovation of three spaces. The first, gathering the 18th century furniture, was not included in the works of the Grand Louvre. Thus, it will be modernized and brought to standards. The Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities will be rearranged in a new circuit and the Cour du Sphinx will be entirely renovated. Finally, the nine rooms of the Sully wing sheltering 17th and 19th century French and British paintings will be reorganized and connected better to the rest of the museum thanks to different footbridges. The works that already began and those to come for the realization of the vast project “Louvre 2020” concern different steps and places. If some of them will be spectacular – like the creation of a new department of Islamic Arts in the Cour Visconti – some others will be more unnoticed but they are fundamental for the modernization and the evolution of such a museum. Thus, the opening to disabled people and the installation of a multimedia guide show that the Louvre is perpetually moving and that its aim is to renew constantly. At the center of cultural initiatives more than ever, today the Musée du Louvre wants to spread its radiation and is developing two annexes: one in Lens and another in Abu Dhabi. Result of the cultural devolution and democratization, the project Louvre-Lens will enable to present the works of arts of the museum in the region Nord Pas-de-Calais. After an international architecture competition that began in 2005, the project management of the future museum was won by a Japanese team. The opening is planned for 2010. Opening hours
