Ile de la Cité, the cradle of Paris

A small piece of the capital in the midst of the Seine, the Ile de la Cité is the ancient cradle of Paris, which was called Lutetia in Gallo-Roman times. It now belongs to the 1st and 4th arrondissements and is the perfect place for scenic strolls. Among the most attractive locations on the island is the wonderful Place Dauphine, discreetly tucked away between the buildings. There is also the imposing Palais de Justice, the sumptuous Sainte Chapelle and the verdant Square du Vert Galant, a public park that sits at the western tip of the island and offers an exceptional panorama of the Seine. Also well worth your attention are the majestic 18th century buildings that give the Ile de la Cité so much of its distinctive character. Immerse yourself in yesteryear with this small island’s cobbled streets, medieval facades, and fantastic view of Notre-Dame Cathedral.
